The megacity Wakes Up to Hazardous Haze After Diwali
As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to severely hazardous air that fell into the "critical" category.
Alarming Pollution Measurements
Several parts of the city registered an air quality index above 500, which equals ten times the healthy limit established by the global health authority.
In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x above safe limits.
Firecracker Ban and Recent Changes
Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous smog that covers the capital as colder weather sets in.
However in recent months, the current local leadership appealed to the highest court to request a relaxation of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".
Legal Decision and Reality
To the disappointment of public health and environmental advocates, the court agreed to the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific periods throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.
Several recording stations throughout the city registered air quality reaching highest levels around late evening to extremely hazardous measurements observed during the festival in at least the past three years.
International Implications
The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the festival also sparked a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on contaminants originating in India following the celebrations.
Long-Standing Pollution Issue
Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a serious problem for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.
Around the festival period, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been documented to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak records ever documented in the Chinese city, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Various Pollution Sources
This crisis in the capital is caused by a combination of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and smoke from agricultural fires in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, farmers routinely ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating dangerous pollution that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air descends.
Health and Financial Impact
The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the capital region is enormous, according to various research.
These hazardous conditions results in elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for ten thousand untimely fatalities annually in the capital.
